Baird Maritime shared a new commercial fishing vessel, the Yakari II, from French shipbuilder Alu Acier Service Marine (AASM). A local naval architect, Mer et Design, fulfilled owner Jean-Joseph Delaby’s requirements for the vessel to be capable of fishing in multiple fisheries.

“The owner wanted a boat that can be used for trawling of scallops and prawns, catching lobsters, whelk, and cuttlefish via traps, and fishing of sea bass and pollock,” AASM told Baird. “Mer et Design developed a new hull that would suit the owner’s requirements, and our work yielded a bespoke boat.”

The 33-foot-long and 14-foot-wide Yakari II was built of all aluminum and has a gross tonnage of 12. Its propulsion consists of a Doosan L126TI diesel engine and two 330-gallon tanks. The vessel’s top speed is 13 knots with a cruising speed of 10 knots.

“The trawling equipment included a gantry with two furlers and two winches. The potting equipment included a net winder and a door for deploying traps. On deck is a large tank for the transport of live catch, thus keeping it as fresh as possible,” AASM shared with Baird.

Yakari II was designed for extended-duration fishing trips, focusing on safety and efficiency. It is equipped with an advanced electronics suite featuring a Furuno radar, a GPS, a depth sounder, VHF radios, a camera, a sonar, and smoke and water level detectors. The vessel also offers comfort, with two below-deck berths and an eating quarter equipped with a microwave oven and a refrigerator in the wheelhouse.

The vessel’s homeport is Le Treport in Normandy, and it fishes primarily within the French sector of the English Channel. The boat has been in service since last September and the builder told Baird that the “feedback from the owner has been very positive.”
