The Transition to a Low Carbon Fishing Fleet initiative convened through the Fishery Friendly Climate Action Campaign captured input from almost 150 fishing vessel owners across Alaska, the West Coast, and New England on a variety of technology pathways that can lead our fleets to a safe, affordable, equitable and practical low carbon energy transition. Participating fishermen shared hopes, concerns, questions, and a deep curiosity in learning more about the applicability of different low carbon energy solutions for fishing vessels of different sizes and uses across our varied fisheries and regions.
In 2025, National Fisherman writers and a steering committee of fishermen and shoreside technicians from around U.S. ports will produce a 20-article series that stokes this curiosity and begins to answer fishermen’s burning questions about what’s known – and not yet known – about the suitability, downsides, and benefits of different low carbon energy solutions for fishing vessels.
