Associate Shellfish Commissioner Jaime S. Pacheco, a commercial fisherman, has proposed restricting commercial fishing at Callie’s Beach.

In turn, Callie’s Beach would then open for recreational fishing, Mr. Pacheco said at Tuesday’s commission meeting, and commercial fishermen would have access to Great River in Waquoit Bay instead.

"We’ve been talking about how rec areas are hard to access, one of them being Great River,” Mr. Pacheco said. “It’s all getting big, it’s getting crowded, it’s not getting raked. And you can’t access it unless you have a boat.”

Mr. Pacheco, who recently earned his aquaculture license in Waquoit Bay, suggested getting rid of the boat lift at Great River and opening the river to commercial fishermen.
