The U.S. Coast Guard and local mariners responded to a mayday call on Friday to assist the crew of the Miss Sandy, a fishing vessel in distress 7 nautical miles off Gloucester, Massachusetts.
The vessel was rapidly taking on 4 to 5 feet of water in its engine room, and exhaust fumes began to fill the space, adding to the danger. The Coast Guard Cutter William Chadwick, alongside good Samaritans and local rescue teams, arrived within 30 minutes to assist.
All crew members were safely rescued, and no injuries were reported. Rescuers attempted to dewater the vessel and tow it to Gloucester Harbor, but the flooding was too severe, and the Miss Sandy ultimately sank.
The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Boston noted the potential risks involved. “This mission highlights the lifesaving dedication of Coast Guard crews and the importance of preparation and safety gear in New England’s harsh winter waters,” officials stated on social media. They added that the situation could have been more serious if it had occurred further offshore or in rougher conditions.
