Underwater robotics and sensor technology company, Kongsberg Discovery, Norway, unveiled their FS80 trawl sonar today. The addition builds upon the company’s established SIMRAD product line, which includes sonars, echo sounders, and gear monitoring systems.

Kongsberg's new FS80 trawl sonar represents a significant upgrade from the FS70 model, according to Jason Holgersen, Kongsberg project manager. The key advancement is in its use of digital technology, which has enabled the development of a multi-frequency system. “The difference between what we've done now and what we have at the FS70 is we've taken advantage of digital technology,” Holgersen explained. “By using digital technology, we've created a multi-frequency system. The FS70 is a single-frequency system.”

The FS80 consolidates multiple acoustic channels into a compact, modular design, offering greater flexibility for users. “We’ve created one package and added multi-frequencies that the user can pick as they need,” Holgersen noted. The system includes a net sounder operating between 165 and 330 kHz, down sounders with both 200–400 kHz and 550 kHz capabilities, and an up sounder covering 200–400 kHz to monitor escapees above the net.

“This will give the user the ability to look up, see what's above the net, monitor intake, and potentially identify species,” he added. These capabilities are aimed at helping operators fine-tune their trawling operations, including assessing net geometry, footrope positioning, and seabed conditions.

Kongsberg has also addressed user feedback on the FS70's handling challenges. “The FS80 is smaller and lighter, about 60% of the FS70's weight, making it easier to manage on deck,” Holgersen said. Reinforced shackles and a more robust design aim to reduce equipment damage, while the system remains compatible with various net sizes and bandwidths, ensuring no loss in performance.

Additionally, the FS80 introduces modular features that expand its utility. “We’re focusing on one bridge unit that can soon integrate with our FX system HUB,” Holgersen stated. The FX system enables connections to cameras, acoustic modems, and active excluders. For example, live video feeds from the trawl allow operators to monitor bycatch in real time. “If you see bycatch, you can use the active selector to open a flap and let the fish escape,” he explained. This modularity also supports additional sensors, giving users control over how they monitor their trawling operations.

Attendees of the Pacific Marine Expo can find the FS80 trawl sonar and other Kongsberg Discovery products at booth #921.
