VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A North Atlantic right whale washed up Feb. 12 in the surf died from a vessel strike, a team from the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center determined one week later on Feb. 17.

Experts determined right whale #3343 suffered a catastrophic blunt force traumatic injury, with impacted a large portion of the spinal column,” NOAA Fisheries reported. “The injuries are consistent with a vessel strike.”
