The 78-foot fishing vessel Northern Endurance ran aground last Thursday morning near Little Priest Rock, about three miles from downtown Unalaska.

According to reports from KUCB and KBBI, there were no injuries to the crew or hazardous conditions, and the vessel was successfully pulled free Friday morning by the local salvage company Resolve Marine.

The City of Unalaska Fire Department responded to the incident Thursday afternoon but handed operations over to the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit shortly after arrival. “The on-scene commander contacted the vessel captain and confirmed there were no injuries to crew members aboard, as well as no additional hazardous conditions,” the Fire Department said in a statement.

Resolve Marine freed the Northern Endurance from the rocks around 9 a.m. Friday, according to Lt. Lawrence Schalles, commanding officer of the Coast Guard’s Marine Safety Unit in Unalaska. The vessel has since been docked near Unalaska’s spit for evaluation.

The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the grounding as part of its standard protocol for commercial fishing vessel incidents. “We heard some (radio) traffic back and forth between a boat that was passing by, asking if (the Northern Endurance) was okay, looked like they were a little shallow, and then also the harbor master trying to get some information from them as well,” John Hollingsworth, COO of the Marine Exchange of Alaska, told KBBI.

Hollingsworth noted that the vessel’s track line appeared relatively straight as it approached Dutch Harbor, but the grounding could have resulted from various factors, including mechanical failures, human error, or navigation system issues.

As of Friday afternoon, Summer Bay Road, which had been closed due to the vessel’s location near Iliuliuk Bay, has reopened, according to KUCB.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard, Unalaska’s emergency responders, and the Resolve Marine team, the Northern Endurance was successfully freed without harm to the crew or the environment.
